Bison were the basis of life for Plains Indians, providing spiritual inspiration, food, clothing, shelter, household items, tools, weapons, and ceremonial items. Plains Indians had over 100 uses for the various parts. Experts estimated there to be 60 million bison roaming the plains prior to 1800. Between 1830 and 1860 this number was decimated by white man with fewer than 1,000 bison surviving.
